Applying for a school place ‘online and on time’

Kirklees – Whether it’s starting school for the first time, or transferring up to Junior, Middle or Secondary School, applying for a school place has always been an exciting time for parents as their child meets a new milestone.

Kirklees Council have made sure the process is as easy as possible through its online Parent Portal.  All applications for school places will now be made online, making the process quicker, simpler and secure.  With the application process now open for places starting in September 2016, the Council is advising parents to “apply online, on time”

Cllr Shabir Pandor, Cabinet member for Schools and Learning said, “Applying for a school place has never been easier.  Parents are already finding the on line portal easy to use and our schools are being very supportive in helping any parents who need a little extra guidance.  There’s lots of information on the council website and the Pupil Admissions team are on hand to answer any questions over the phone. I’m very pleased that we are using this technology in such an effective way.”

It’s easy to apply online: all parents need is an email address and access to the internet.  The advantages of the online system include being able to stop and save the application part way through and return to it later.  Also, once the application has been submitted an email acknowledgment is sent instantly.

Parents applying on time have a better chance of getting one of the schools of their choice – applying late can potentially mean being offered a school place in a less convenient location.  Nearly 95% of children are starting new schools this month that were in their parent’s top three choices on their application.

Kirklees Council is committed to making its processes as simple as possible and moving towards digital technology is part of that.  Paper-based application forms will no longer be produced, which will also save significantly on costs and paper.

Help and advice for parents is available through local libraries, schools, Customer Service Centres (Dewsbury & Huddersfield) and Pupil Admissions (01484 225007).

The deadlines for submitting applications for children starting school in September 2016 are:

  • Secondary School – you must apply between 1 September 2015 and 31 October 2015.
  • Junior or Middle School – you must apply between 1 September 2015 and 15 January 2016.
  • Primary School (for children born between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012) – you must apply between 1 September 2015 and 15 January 2016.
