World Mental Health Day takes place globally on Monday 10th October and Bradford marks the occasion with its “Out of the Shadows” event.
Taking place on Darley Street in Bradford the event is a collaboration between ‘Making Your Mind Up’, an inspiring, creative and innovative online service that aims to make a lasting difference to your mental health and wellbeing, art organisation ‘Brick Box’ and theatre company ‘Bloomin’ Buds’.
The Director of Making Your Mind Up (MYMUP) explains the event.
“’Out of the Shadows’ is a Mental Health event organised by the World Health Organisation earlier this year. We wanted to organise something locally and when we heard about the Wild Woods venue we thought it would be the perfect city centre location.
“Our event aims to promote the importance of emotional openness and speaking honestly about one’s feelings. We also want to reinforce the importance of listening and giving each other a safe space to listen and share how we are feeling”
Speaking about the event, Bradford based actor and MYMUP Ambassador Sam Moody is looking forward to the challenge.
“I think it’s a really interesting way to promote World Mental Health Day and the importance of speaking about our feelings and emotions. It’s also interesting from an acting point of view. Having to interact and improvise with an unsuspecting audience is really exciting!”
Katie, from the Bloomin’ Buds theatre company, is also involved.
“I really like how we are using light to symbolise the act of listening. When people are going through dark or difficult times listening to people’s problems really does help. I think it’s a great way to visualize this and communicate this to the audience”
At the event members of the public will engage and interact with characters that are waiting in the shadows. When they approach them they will ask “Are you ok?” and this will start an improvised interaction with the characters.”
Alex from MYMUP explains further:
“This event will use music, light and drama to create an experience that will not only promote World Mental Health day but also to stress the importance of communication and emotional openness.
“At the end of the performance we will ask the audience to identify how each character communicated their feelings and what they have learned from the process.”
Out of The Shadows will take place at Wild Woods on Darley Street on Monday 10th 11am – 17:30pm. It’s a free event and no booking is necessary. The music for the event was produced by artist Figure Ground.
