dilipkumarbday28India’s most celebrated actor Dilip Kumar, known to many as the greatest Indian actor ever, turns 93 today.

Born Yusuf Khan in Peshawar, now Pakistan, in 1922, Kumar was given his stage name by the noted Hindi novelist Baghwati Chari Varma. Kumar’s first taste of what the world would eventually know as the ‘Bollywood’ film industry can in 1947 with Jugnu, a musical drama featuring Pakistani diva Noor Jehan and released, coincidentally, at the time of Partition. Eschewing the cinema of his homeland, Kumar, still only in his mid-20s, remained in India and gained a reputation as a naturalistic actor. His growing reputation was further established in S.U. Sunny’s Babul (1950) and especially in Mehboob Khan’s inspirational Aan (1952).

The public increasingly recognised in Kumar a versatile actor who could tackle any role.

maxresdefault (2)His greatest performance as tragedian par excellence came courtesy of Devdas – a blistering and affecting adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic tale of lost romance that would transform him from jobbing actor to the darling of 1950s Indian cinema.

Kumar continued to dominate the Indian box office during the 1960s, and, in the 1970s, he married Saira Bano, his frequent co-star on a succession of films including Gopi (1970) and Bairaag (1976).

bigb-dilip-kumar-shakti759Whether playing obsessed lovers, impoverished writers, timid peasants or noirish criminals, Kumar’s fearlessness and versatility as actor, writer and producer is evident in more than 60 films spread over almost 60 years. Kumar was the first recipient of India’s Film Fare Award for Daag (1953) and went on to win on seven other occasions – the last time for Ramesh Sippy’s Shakti in 1982 – 29 years later.

Now 93, Dilip Kumar is a living legend in Hindi cinema and resides in the Parli Hill suburb of Mumbai, India with his wife, Saira Bano.

Here’s wishing Dilip Kumar a Happy 93rd Birthday!

‘Amplifier’ singer Imran Khan, who has lent his voice for a song in upcoming film ‘Tevar’, says the new-age rappers might have become a rage with the listeners but they have not given quality music to Bollywood

Imran has made his debut in the Hindi Film industry with the ‘Lets Celebrate’ song and said he does not like the music of many hit hit hip-hop artists and rappers.

Imran Khan“Personally I don’t like their music. I feel it is just over-hyped. These Punjabi rappers and artists, who have entered Bollwyood from outside, have destroyed its image. Bollywood music is not about hip-hop but it is more about colours. Hip-hop should be left to others. And if one attempts that, it should be done in a proper way but the current fusion of hip-hop and Bollywood, in my opinion, is not good. I will bring a change in this scene now.” Imran told in an interview.

The popular Punjabi singer said before ‘Tevar’ he had turned down many offers by Bollywood filmmakers but Boney Kapoor (producer of ‘Tevar’) made him feel at home and he felt an instant connection with him.

One Direction star Zayn Malik is being wooed by Bollywood bosses who want him on a blockbuster soundtrack. The 21-year-old hunk has been lined up to join the likes of Kylie and Snoop Dogg, who have swelled their fan base – and coffers – through the lucrative Asian movie scene. Producers in Mumbai want to tap into his global popularity and Bradford-born Zayn could pocket up to £500,000 for a song. A movie insider says: “One very big production company is putting together an offer for him to act as well as sing.  Previous big pop stars who have done songs for Bollywood include Kylie who was paid £800,000 to appear in Blue, Snoop Dogg for the film Singh Is King and rapper Akon for Ra One.

Bollywood came to the streets Bradford in October to shoot the film, Welcome to Karachi. Directed by Ashish Mohan and produced by Vashu Baghnani, the acclaimed producer responsible for past blockbusters such as Biwi No. 1 and Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya, the latest project is due to hit the cinemas by next year. Originally, Life of Pie actor Irrfan Khan was due to appear in the film but due to unavailable dates, he was replaced by fledgeling actor Jackky Baghnani. Baghnani joins fellow actor Arshad Warsi in this tale of two friends who are stuck in Karachi due to mistaken identities.

When asked why he chose Karachi, director Rohit Shetty said, “Karachi when compared to any other place is considered to be the most dangerous city, but it’s the people who make the perception. Good human beings are everywhere and that’s what I would like to show through my film.”

Talking about his character, Warsi said, “My character is a little accident-prone as things keep happening to him all the time.”

The filmmakers shot extensive scenes at one of Bradford’s most popular Bazaars, Bradford Bazaar on Cemetery Road much to the joy of its owner Jas Maharaja, also MD of Maharaja Fabrics.

Speaking to Urban Echo, Mr Maharaja said the film shoot is positive news for Bradford. “Vashu Baghnani is one of the leading producers in India and worked with more or less all the big stars in Bollywood. The fact that they have chosen Bradford as a location further solidifies our reputation as UNESCO City of Film,” he states. Asked whether this could be the start of more films being shot in the city in the future, he excitedly replies, “Absolutely, why not? We have a beautiful city with awe-inspiring locations in Haworth and beyond. The world needs to see our beautiful city and hopefully after the film is released, we can encourage more filmmakers from the Asian sub-continent to invest in our city in the future.”

The film was also shot in other locations around the district including the council chamber in Bradford’s City Hall. The film is due to release in 2015. In the meantime we can only wait in anticipation to see Bradford featured in a major Bollywood release.
