CUPPING (HIJAAMAH) THERAPY WITH ZENITH CLINIC

(Homeopathic Consultant: Moulana Hayaat R. Khan, B.A (HONS) D.I.HOM. R.HOM. DIP B.E.R. R.S.HOM fully insured member of the Society of Homeopaths and bound by their code of ethics)

Many people may have noticed the round bruising marks in the recent Olympic games on top level athletes like the record breaking 28 Olympic medal winning Michael Phelps and gymnast Alex Naddour amongst others, and wandered if they were involved in maybe a bar fight.

In actual fact, these round bruises are signs of cupping, or Hijaamah as it is known as in Arabic. This is a very old system of healing which has been endorsed and recommended by The Final Messenger of Allah SWT, The Noble Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) over 1400 hundred years ago and above all else, it is something which The Noble Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself used and recommended, thus making it a ‘sunnah’.

There are many ahadeeth or authentic statements of The Noble Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with regards to cupping therapy. Its importance can be gauged from the fact that Imam Buckhari R.A has allotted 5 chapters in his monumental Hadeeth book, Saheeh Al Bukhari, to Hijaamah (cupping therapy).

Cupping therapy is a 5,000 year old ancient therapy used for a multitude of ailments ranging from asthma and eczema to infertility and psoriasis with great success. It is an alternative therapy, meaning patients often attend after conventional medicine has failed them and as a last resort. The results can be staggering. In fact the testimonial book at The Zenith Clinic is full of patient testimonials who have first-hand experienced the amazing therapeutic powers of cupping therapy or Hijaamah.

Pain is a subject that keeps being mentioned in the testimonial book such as back pain, sciatic pain, fibrosis, myalgia, migraine pain and stiff shoulder. I remember one patient who visited the clinic. He was involved in a car accident in Leeds, in which he became stuck in the passenger side foot well in the aftermath of the collision. He subsequently had over 52 physio treatments for this pain. Some paid by his insurers, others by his work place and some out of his own pocket. Not even a single treatment helped him!

He came to the clinic and we placed two cups on the area of pain and performed hijaamah. This was on Thursday. The following week, I received a phone call from him during a break from my Homeopathy clinic. He was absolutely ecstatic as the chronic pain in his lower back which he had endured for over a year, and for which he had 52 physio appointments and massages, had completely disappeared immediately after his first cupping session and he had been pain free for a whole week. Additionally, he had suffered a single migraine attack all week [he would usually have 2 -3 migraine attacks weekly]. Speaking of migraines, we have consistently seen migraine suffers benefit amazingly from cupping therapy. Where a person would have migraine attacks around 2- 3 times a week before cupping therapy, after the 1st session of hijaamah, they would be migraine free for 4 weeks. After having all 3 recommended sessions of hijaama, they would consistently be migraine free for the entire year. The same applies to gout disorders, female menstrual disorders, dysmenorrhea (painful periods) menorrhagia (heavy periods) and amenorrhea (lack of periods). All respond very favourably to hijaamah therapy. Hijaamah is very useful in respiratory system disorders like asthma, influenza and coughing. It can aid hugely in helping one to stop smoking. Ailments of the gastrointestinal system like peptic ulcers, indigestion, inflammatory bowel diseases, like crohns disease and ulcerative colitis all respond favourably. It has won many laurels in treating sexual weakness, loss of sexual desire and premature ejaculation.

The procedure

When a person first visits one of our multi-disciplinary clinics for Hijaamah (cupping therapy), he/she is asked to fill in a full medical questionnaire providing full details of their health and ailments and any medication they may be taking. They are then led to one of the private modern therapy rooms where they change in to a medical gown. There oxygen

levels are checked, as well as iron levels, B.P and pulse levels. If satisfactory, the patient is asked to lie down on the medical couch and the area that requires cupping will be cleansed with an anti-bacterial agent like savlon. Then sterile single use cups are placed on the selected areas and the air is pulled out creating suction which lifts the underlying skin by 2 / 3 inches. After a set amount of time, the cups are removed, the area cleaned again and then small scratches, no larger than a hair follicle, are made. The cups are placed on again and suction is applied and a set amount of blood is taken out. The entire process is painless. The only uncomfortable part if any, is when the small scratches are made, and even then, most patients find the scratches make then laugh (as the nerve ends are stimulated) rather than cause discomfort. At the end, the cups are taken off, and the practioner applies anti septic cream and mepore patches to the cupped areas. The patient is then allowed to dress and enjoy a complimentary drink.

We have fully trained female and male therapists.

Basic rules of cupping

Generally, cupping is done on the site of the disease or pain, alongside certain other relevant points related to the disease or disorder. For kidney disorders, it will be done around the kidneys, for liver disorders, around the liver, etc. Hijaamah is very effective in detoxing the body and ridding it of toxic metals such as mercury, cadmium, aluminium, lead, and other metals which the body cannot remove via its own excretory pathways. Cupping should not be done on a Wednesday as it has been prohibited. One should be very careful that the practioner is fully qualified in his field. One does not become qualified in a mini surgery as cupping is classed as in 1 week. All the item used should be single use and disposable. The couch should be fully sterile and disinfected after each patient. A full medical history must be taken as there are many contraindications for cupping such as low blood pressure and pregnancy etc.

How frequently should cupping be done?

If the patient is not cured by one session of Hijaamah, then Hijaamah should be repeated from 3 to 7 times, with a gap of 2 weeks to 1 month between each treatment. The best method is to do it on the lunar dates of 17th, 19th and 21st of each month, preferably Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Is Hijaamah effective for Sehr (black magic)?

Ibn Al – Qayyim R A, has narrated a tradition from Abdur Rahmaan Ibn Abu Laila that when the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was afflicted by black magic, he had Hijaamah performed. Ibn Qayyim then states that “if one was informed by Socrates or Ibn Seena or other great physician that cupping is a cure for black magic, he would be instantly believed, what then to say about a being whose knowledge and superiority there is no doubt.”

Diseases that have been cured by Hijaamah

Headaches, depression, migraine, shoulder aches, kidney pain, blood pressure, dizziness, tinnitus, backache, varicose veins, leg pain, heel pain, psychiatric illness, allergies and black magic. Pain in any part of the body can be relieved by applying a cup to that area.

In the next issue of Urban Echo, I will categorically mention the ahadeeth of Rasullul Allah SAW regarding cupping therapy.
