Getting in the blocks for the Bradford City Runs

Bradford City Runs is a great event for beginners as well as faster runners since it offers three different distances around the Bradford area.

The event, organised by Bradford Council with Bradford Athletics Network for this Sunday (October 25), offers people the opportunity to do either a 5K, a 10K or a half marathon. There is also a kids race which starts before the others.

The 5K route is a great chance for anybody who wants to walk or jog a shorter route.

Local runner Carol Lindsey, who runs with a community running group called Women on the Run, is already looking forward to taking part in the 5K.

Carol only started running at the beginning of this year in a bid to get fitter and take on a new challenge.

Joining Women on the Run, which sets off from Thornton Recreation Centre on Tuesday nights at 6.30pm, she has never looked back.

“I absolutely love it,” said Carol. “There are several groups that cater for all levels so if you just want to walk or run and walk, that is fine. They are really sociable and I’ve made some great friends.

“It’s great for women as you don’t feel threatened, and it is an opportunity to have some time for yourself and feel you’ve achieved something good.”

Women on the Run is organised by personal trainers Jacqui Rawnsley-Turner and Michele Sanderson.

All three routes start and finish in Bradford’s multi-award winning City Park, taking in the area around the University of Bradford and Bradford College campuses.

The kids race starts at 9.15am, then the half marathon starts at 9.40am and the 5K and 10K races start at 9.55am. There are cash prizes for the category winners, and all entrants will receive a medal and a t-shirt.

Cllr Imran Khan, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Sport, said: “What is great about the Bradford City Runs is that it appeals to everyone, whether they want to walk around in fancy dress, or get around their chosen course in record time. There is also lots of entertainment for those spectating, making it a fun day out for all.”
