The finishing touches were made to a magical summer display at The Broadway shopping centre today, as three and a half tonnes of sand were transformed into a unique tribute to Bradford while shoppers watched.
Visitors to the centre have been watching closely all week as local sand artist team Sand In Your Eye carved three spectacular sand sculptures, finishing with the final details today. The works of art were revealed, showing superstar magician Dynamo back in his home town, worldwide pop sensation and City heartthrob Zayn Malik, and a reimagining of the Bradford skyline, depicted as a montage of famous local landmarks and residents.
The sculptures, which are located outside Debenhams, will be in place at the centre throughout the summer, and shoppers who take a selfie in front of them along with #WishYouWereHere will be in with a chance to win a package of 10 prizes from The Broadway and its retailers and restaurants.
Ian Ward, general manager at The Broadway, says: ‘The completion of these sand-tacular works of art marks the start of what promises to be a fantastic summer season at The Broadway.
‘We commissioned the sculptures to celebrate all things Bradford. While we love getting away at this time of year, we wanted to remind Bradfordians of all the wonderful things about our city which are there to be enjoyed throughout the summer.
‘The sculptures are just incredible, and our shoppers have let us know just how much they have enjoyed watching Sand in Your Eye at work. We’ve seen everyone young and old absolutely enthralled by the theatre they’ve brought to the malls this week.’
Alongside the sand sculptures, The Broadway is also hosting Teddy Bear Picnics every Friday until 2 September, where youngsters can enjoy everything from teddy bear biscuit making, to storytelling, face painting and puppet shows.
On 29th August, special guests Ben and Holly will be bringing a taste of their Little Kingdom to The Broadway, with any young fans invited to come and meet the popular characters.
And children will also be able to ride the brand new Broadway Express train which arrived in the shopping centre last month, as it chugs through the malls at 5 miles per hour carrying 18 young passengers at a time.
One lucky winner who tweets a selfie with the sculptures to @TheBroadwayBrad using the #WishYouWereHere will win:
